This resulted in a massive 120,000 gallons of sewage traveling through two layers of berms and vacuum trucks to Monument Road. The affected area includes Imperial Beach, where a yellow sign and an empty coastline now symbolize the pervasive sewage odor. The beach was previously closed for over 1,000 days due to contaminated water.
Leon Benham, a long-time resident of the Tijuana River Estuary, has seen his beautiful backyard contaminated by raw sewage. He shares his experience, noting the strange impact on his plants, which flourish due to the high fertilizer content in the sewage water. However, this contamination has also devalued his home and the properties of his neighbors, with homes just a few miles from Coronado losing millions in value. Benham, a founder of the Citizens for Coastal Conservancy, has been advocating for solutions, but he remains skeptical about the proposed permanent solutions, including a $600 million expansion of the South Bay Treatment Plant.
