"Moving to Arizona from Los Angeles saved my life," Muniz declared. But here's where it gets controversial: he's not talking about a physical rescue, but rather a spiritual and emotional rebirth.
The allure of Arizona's slower pace
Muniz explained that Arizona's laid-back lifestyle allowed him to reconnect with the simple joys of everyday life, something that was often missing in the fast-paced, celebrity-driven culture of Los Angeles. "Going to the store, just doing things, was a lot easier in Arizona," he said. "Los Angeles was hectic, and everyone was trying to be seen or heard. It wasn't my scene."
Finding normalcy in the desert
Arizona offered Muniz a sense of normalcy he couldn't find in L.A. He described how the culture in the city often kept him indoors and disconnected from the world. "Moving to Arizona made me want to do more normal things. I found myself staying at home in L.A., unless I had to work. I just didn't want to leave."
A childhood prediction comes true
And this is the part most people miss: Muniz shared a fascinating story from his childhood that shaped his connection to Arizona. While filming in New Orleans, he and his family visited a palm reader in the French Quarter. The reader told him he was a judge in his past life, defending Native Americans in the old Southwest. At the time, Muniz had never been west of the Mississippi, but when he eventually visited Arizona, the prediction felt eerily accurate.
"The minute I came to Arizona, I felt like this is where I was meant to be," he said. A feeling that still resonates today.
A new chapter and a racing career
As Muniz settled into his new life in Arizona, he began to think about the next chapter of his career. He had started racing in 2006, and this became a focus for him. "A lot of the reason I went back to racing was because of my son," he explained. Muniz wanted his son to see him working hard towards a goal, something that would inspire and motivate him.
"I wanted him to see me working really hard for something that's not easy. Very few people make it to that level and have success. I decided then that I wanted to go back to racing."
A busy racing schedule ahead
Muniz, a NASCAR and GT4 America driver, had initially thought that last year would be his last in racing. But after his final race in Phoenix, he realized he had "unfinished business" in the racing world. Now, he's preparing for the busiest season of his career, with a whopping 42 races planned for next year.
"It'll be a very busy schedule, but I'm excited," he said.
