In the heart of Massachusetts, a breathtaking transformation has taken place. Imagine a serene lake surrounded by 49 cedar-clad cabins, each a haven of tranquility. This is Prospect Berkshires, a unique 'landscape hotel' that seamlessly blends rustic charm with modern comforts. But here's the twist: these cabins weren't built from scratch. A team of local visionaries, Alander Construction, took prefabricated cabins and masterfully arranged them around the lake, creating a stunning retreat.
The project began with a historic campground in dire need of revival. Alander Construction, led by Ian Rasch and Roman Montano, collaborated with designer Jade-Snow Carroll to breathe new life into the site. They envisioned a hotel that would become one with its natural surroundings, offering guests an immersive experience. The team renovated a 19th-century building into a welcoming center, added saunas, and built a pool house, all while preserving the site's historical charm.
To ensure the cabins provided both privacy and accessibility, the team partnered with Gans and Company, a New York design studio, to masterplan the layout. Each cabin, constructed by Amish builders Zook Cabins, was carefully positioned on a chassis and transported to the site. The result? A harmonious blend of modern amenities and natural beauty.
The cabins' design is a study in understated elegance. With one side mostly closed off, large windows frame the breathtaking landscape, inviting nature indoors. The interiors feature pine accents and subtle pops of color, creating a cozy atmosphere. The cabins come in two sizes, with or without a bathroom, ensuring guests can choose their preferred level of comfort.
But the attention to detail doesn't stop there. The team worked with landscape designer Raina Weber, Andropogon Associates, and BioHabitats to create 'wetland gardens' along the lakeshore, planting over 2,500 trees. These gardens not only enhance the beauty of the site but also serve an ecological purpose, cooling the area, attracting pollinators, and stabilizing the shoreline. And that's not all—a wooden pavilion with a polycarbonate roof provides a space for outdoor gatherings, while personal saunas and dock infrastructure add to the lakeside experience.
