In the pursuit of better health outcomes, we often overlook a critical aspect - the quality of the healthcare products we rely on. This is especially true for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where local production of medicines, vaccines, and diagnostics faces unique challenges.

The WHO's Mission: Empowering Local Production

The Local Production and Assistance (LPA) Unit, a division of the World Health Organization (WHO), is on a mission to empower Member States, particularly LMICs, to establish sustainable local production of essential medical products. Their holistic approach involves ecosystem assessments, strategy development, capacity building, and technology transfer assistance.

Week of Quality: A Global Training Initiative

To address the challenges of local production, the LPA Unit launched the Week of Quality, a global training event. The first Week of Quality, held in June 2023, focused on establishing quality specifications for vaccines, medicines, and in vitro diagnostics (IVDs). This event was a stepping stone towards achieving quality standards and was attended by vaccine and biopharmaceutical manufacturers and regulators.

The second Week of Quality, which took place from April to June 2024, delved deeper into regulatory compliance for medicines, IVDs, and vaccines. Over 1700 attendees, including manufacturers and regulators, explored key aspects of compliance, with a special focus on biotherapeutics. Additionally, for the first time, over 1000 IVD manufacturers and regulators gained insights into optimizing IVD product development.

Knowledge Sharing: Q&A Sessions and Expert Insights

The second Week of Quality generated numerous questions from manufacturers and regulators. These questions, along with expert answers, have been compiled into a comprehensive training material. The Q&A sessions were facilitated by industry experts, national regulatory authorities, and other organizations, ensuring a rich and diverse knowledge base.

This training material serves as a continuous learning resource for manufacturers and stakeholders. It aims to bridge knowledge gaps, strengthen existing capacities, and empower local production of quality vaccines, medicines, and IVDs.
